Annual Wellness Exams

There are certain things in life that we do on a regular basis. We regularly change the oil in our cars. We (hopefully) call our parents on a regular basis. We may even regularly get together with friends for an evening out. But when it comes to regular wellness exams, we are often less consistent. While 98 percent of Americans believe regular checkups with their doctor are important, only 64 percent actually receive a wellness exam of any type.

What is an Annual Wellness Exam?

annual wellness examAnnual Wellness Exams are performed once a year in an effort to gain information about your body and any potential problems it might experience. The idea behind this type of checkup is to identify trends such as weight gain, decreased flexibility or mobility, increased aches and pains, and give you the tools to combat any discomfort or potential illness. During your exam, the doctor will measure your height, weight, blood pressure and heart rate. He will also measure your mobility, flexibility and address any of your health concerns. He will likely order a blood test to check for any inflammation markers, your risk of heart disease and Type II diabetes and any possible nutrient deficiencies.

Who Needs an Annual Wellness Exam?

Most children receive regular checkups from the time they are born until they start school. For many, the practice of seeing a doctor on an annual basis just to make sure everything is going well is replaced by visiting the doctor only when they are sick. This trend tends to continue throughout adulthood until we approach middle age and begin experiencing health problems. However, many of the aches, pains, digestive problems, mobility issues, and even more serious health concerns we experience can be addressed and prevented long before they appear if we only attended to our health when we were well. That being said, everyone needs an annual wellness exam, no matter how young or old they are.

What if Something Turns Up on My Annual Wellness Exam?

It is important to see a doctor on an annual basis because they can monitor any differences from one year to the next that you may not notice. These seemingly small changes often add up to hormonal imbalances, neurological interference issues or metabolic problems that could indicate a more serious underlying condition. Fortunately, many of these issues can be addressed and resolved before they become life-threatening if you can catch them soon enough. If your examination reveals something unexpected or a health concern warrants them, additional blood and imaging tests can give you and your doctor additional insight into what is going on in your body. From there, a plan can be put in place to address any underlying causes, sometimes before you even experience symptoms.
