Stem Cell Injections
For decades, doctors have believed that once your joints have been injured, the only way to repair them is through surgical replacement. With new advances in medical technology, surgery is not your only option for treating injured joints, tendons, and soft tissues in your body. Stem cell injections have been shown to regenerate cartilage, repair torn menisci, heal ligament and tendon tears and keep you out of the surgeon’s office.
What are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are a classification of undifferentiated cells, meaning they have not determined the type of tissue they will become. These cells can be found throughout the body, in tissues of the brain, bone marrow, blood, muscles, skin, and liver. These cells lie in wait until there is an injury or disease and then they go to work repairing the damaged parts of the body. With the ability to divide indefinitely, stem cells have the capability of creating a wide range of cell types based on the organ where they are found. In other words, stem cells found in your brain can regenerate after a brain injury and heal damaged areas.
Embryonic stem cells, those from an embryo during the fourth through the sixth day of development, are extracted and used to create any type of cell found in the human body. While some have ethical difficulty with embryonic stem cell research and implantation, the same type of stem cells can be extracted from a consenting mother’s amniotic fluid and lining of the placenta. Amniotic stem cells can then become cells mirroring the type where they are implanted. Those placed in the knee can regenerate damaged cartilage, heal a torn meniscus or repair a ligament that would otherwise require surgery. Stem cells placed into a torn rotator cuff can help heal the tear without going under the knife.
What are Stem Cell Injections?
Stem cell injections come in many forms. At Sandstone Chiropractic, we use cleaned and processed stem cells from amniotic fluid because of its higher concentration of healthy cells that can grow into any type tissue, regardless of where they are placed. The number of injections you receive will largely depend on the injury or level of degeneration.
What Conditions Can Be Treated with Stem Cell Injections?
Stem cell injections can be used for a patient suffering from:
- Meniscus tear
- Ligament injury
- Tendon injury including injuries to the Achilles tendon
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Worn cartilage from weight, pressure, injury, or overuse
- Rotator cuff injury
Are Stem Cell Injections Safe?
Yes! While many developments in stem cell therapy require the cells come from the donor to avoid the risk of rejection, amniotic stem cells are immunoprivileged. This means stem cell injections do not cause the body’s immune system to reject them as foreign cells. All donors are consenting adults and all tissues go through an FDA approved screening process to ensure the safety of the sample. In fact, when stem cell injections were going through the FDA approval process, not a single patient reported an adverse reaction to the treatment.
